Hello, I'm Michael Darby BSc(Hons), CEng, MBCS, MIAP. Before creating Applied Software Engineering Ltd. I worked as a Design and Development Software Engineer for more than 15 years progressing from writing compilers, up to managing teams of personnel producing SCADA Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Emergency Mobilisation System RTUs , and Access Control/ CCTV/ Intruder detection systems (RTUs and Central monitoring stations). Working for an expanding company producing bespoke monitoring systems it was ussually necessary to bid based on 'infinite resources'. In the happy, although infrequent, occasions when two large contracts came in at the same time it was often necessary to take on more 'temporary' development staff to handle both contracts. As a manager, this was always a problem since the original schedules would have been proposed on the assumption that permanent staff would be working on the job. Contractors inevitably need some kind of aclimatisation before being 'ready to fly', and you could never be certain just how good they were until too late! Inevitably the company had to bear the full burden of misjudged timescales and resource requirements. ![]() 'Ready to fly' Our typical client may develop their own microprocessor based systems every now and then, or have an idea for a Microsoft Windows based product, or simply doesn't have enough staff to handle all the projects they would like to be working on right now. They have one thing in common, they do not have the relevant software expertise available at this time, and cannot justify creating the permanent software position(s) that would be needed to implement the required project. Although we prefer to work with embedded micro-processor systems, our expertise also covers PCs running Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. |
